Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel (1936 – 2025)
It is with sadness and respect that we reflect on the passing of Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel, a towering figure in international arbitration and a cherished member of our global community.
Professor Böckstiegel served on the ICCA Governing Board from 1990 to 2012, and thereafter on the ICCA Advisory Board. He spoke at numerous ICCA Congresses, including ICCA 1990 in Stockholm, ICCA 2002 in London, and ICCA 2016 in Mauritius. He was widely respected as an academic and arbitrator, and demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering the next generation of arbitration scholars and practitioners.
The Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel Foundation was established in 2021 and, through its Scholarship programme, offers promising young academics the opportunity to attend ICCA Congresses—an opportunity that might otherwise be beyond their reach.
ICCA is grateful for Professor Böckstiegel’s many years of service and for his commitment to the organisation’s objectives of promoting the use of, and improving the processes of, arbitration around the world. His dedicated support for education and academic exchange will remain part of ICCA’s ongoing work.
ICCA extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
