ICCA-EJTN Workshop: Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards — A Practical Workshop
On 18 November 2025, the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (“ICCA”) and the European Judicial Training Network (“EJTN”) jointly organised an interactive online workshop titled “Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards: A Practical Workshop.”
The session brought together over 40 judges and judicial staff for a discussion on the enforcement of foreign arbitral awards under the framework of the 1958 New York Convention.
The workshop began with an introductory session and theoretical overview of arbitration in general, and the New York Convention enforcement regime in particular, highlighting the latter’s pro-enforcement bias. Particular attention was given to the public policy ground for refusal of enforcement and its interpretation by courts.
The workshop concluded with a practical segment during which real cases on recognition and enforcement were discussed. This final exchange reinforced key themes and practical takeaways from the theoretical segment.
The workshop was led by Professor Andrés Jana, Chair of ICCA’s Judiciary Committee, Ms. Lindsay Gastrell, Rapporteur of ICCA’s Judiciary Committee, and Ms. Erica Stein, Independent Arbitrator. The organisers also acknowledged the contribution of the EJTN, in particular Judge Stylianos Bios and Mr. Daniel Graur, for their support and guidance throughout the session.
