General Bio

Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf serves as the Vice-President of the International Court of Justice, of which he has been a Member since 6 February 2009. He is a Member of the ICSID panel of arbitrators.  A Member of the Institute of International Law (Institut de droit international), as well as a Founder and General Editor of the African Yearbook of International Law / Annuaire africain de droit international, and a Founding Member and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the African Foundation for International Law.  He has previously served as Chief Legal Counsel to various international organizations including UNESCO and UNIDO.

Vice-President Yusuf received his legal education in Somalia, where he obtained a Laurea di Dottore in Giurisprudenza (Dr. Juris) in 1973. He was then appointed a Lecturer in International Law at Somali National University. He conducted post-graduate studies in Florence, Italy, before gaining his title of Docteur ès sciences politiques (International Law) at the Graduate Institute of International Studies, University of Geneva, in 1980. He later held the post of Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva, and visiting lectureships in numerous universities.

He is the author or editor of more than 7 books and over 50 articles in various fields of public international law.
