International Moot Competitions:

The IISTL Commercial and Maritime Moot:

  • An international arbitration moot which concentrates on commercial issues with a maritime element to it, the third IISTL Commercial and Martime Moot (hosted by the Institute for International Shipping and Trade Law) took place from 18-20 June 2016.
  •  The initial rounds are held in Swansea University and the final takes place in Middle Temple, London.
  • The competition is sponsored by Informa Law and 7 King’s Bench Walk and is open to teams worldwide.

The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot:

  • Now in its 24th year in Vienna and its 14th year in Hong Kong, the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is an established and popular arbitration competition for law students. Teams from law schools from all countries are eligible to compete. “Pre-moot” practice competitions are also hosted in the lead-up to the final competitions.

  • Participants in the Vis Moot can later become members of the Moot Alumni Association (the MAA).

Moot Madrid:

  • Founded in 2009, the Moot Madrid is an arbitration competition for law students conducted in Spanish. Teams from law schools from all countries are eligible to compete.
  • Moot Madrid involves a case-study to be settled by recourse to international commercial arbitration, where different law bodies from Uniform Law (transport of goods, international bankruptcy, electronic commerce, international sale of goods, etc) will be applicable. The competition features both written and oral pleadings.

  • Young practitioners and academics with a background and/or interest in the relevant fields may enquire (mootmadrid@uc3m.es) about supporting the competition by serving as arbitrators and memorial judges.

The International ADR Mooting Competition:

  • The 2016 ADR Mooting Competition took place from  5 - 9 July at the City University of Hong Kong.
  • The competition is now in its 6th year.
  • The moot is conducted by City University of Hong Kong in association with the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) and Columbia University (New York).

Investment treaty arbitration moots:

The Foreign Direct Investment International Moot Competition or FDI Moot ( www.fdimoot.org )

  • The FDI Moot explores investor-State Arbitration and the protection and regulation of foreign investment under customary international law and treaty. The competition features both written and oral pleadings.
  • 2017 will be the 10th year of this competition.
  • Global Orals will be heard from 2-5 November 2017 at Suffolk University Law School; Africa Regional Orals will be heard from 1-2 September 2017 in Nairobi; Asia Pacific Regional Orals will be heard from 9-12 August 2017 at Seoul National University and South Asia Regional Orals will be heard from 25-27 August 2017 in New Delhi. 
  • Young practitioners and academics with a background and/or interest in the relevant fields may inquire (admin@fdimoot.org) about supporting the competition by serving as arbitrators and memorial judges. Teams may also include LLM students and recent graduates (six months).

The Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot (hosted by Goethe University, Frankfort)

  • The FIAC Moot Court reflects the increasing trend to resolve investment disputes through arbitration.
  • The 10th Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court will be held from 6-11 March 2017 at the University of Frankfurt am Main.
