On 26 May 2010, the Young Arbitration Practitioners (YAP) held their eighth colloquium in Rio de Janeiro, on the topic of “Arbitration in Changing Times”. Lively discussions were conducted under the guidance of moderators V.V. Veeder and Guillermo Aguillar-Alvarez, focusing on the status and duties of arbitrators, and arbitration and sovereign entities

The YAP event also saw the launch of Young ICCA.

Roundtable Topics: - Background: Role and relevance of witness statements in international arbitration proceedings; - Drafting witness statements: typical procedure and pitfalls to consider - Background & requirements of document request: Role and relevance of document disclosure in international arbitration; typical five stages of the document disclosure process in overview (distribution of a Redfern Schedule); the requirements for an admissible document request, Art. 3 IBA Rules on the Taking of Evidence; interplay between document requests and burden of proof. Objections against document requests; Art. 9 of the IBA Rules on the Taking of Evidence; levelling the playing field between different legal systems with respect to privileges and other basis for objection.

Roundtable Topics: - State and Investor Action in Times of Distress: How Should Claimants and Respondents Act?; - Contract Claims against Sovereign Entities: Unique Challenges and Distinctions; - Contract and Treaty Claims: How to Address and Avoid Double Recovery. Each roundtable will bring viewpoints from the perspective of treaty and contractual arbitration along with counsel who have represented parties on both sides of the dispute, counting on the presence of many experienced and knowledgeable practitioners and arbitrators. In addition, the event will have the institutional perspective, with the view from Jose Ricardo Feris of the ICC.

The first Young ICCA skills training workshop was held in Geneva on 19 May 2011, on the topic of "Memorial-writing in International Arbitration". Students and young practitioners from Africa, Europe, Asia and America participated in a lively and informal discussion led by Klaus Reichert SC, Arif Hyder Ali and Anne-Veronique Schaepfler.
